There are many historical references to marshlands and canoe travel.
Warren is indeed an industrial area that developed out of wetlands.

2012 Cleaning the Red Run

Pollution prevention to the tune of $350,000
along with stormwater management for $ 500,000
is taking place along the Red Run as local governments
take action to clean up the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair.

Retention Treatment Basins in Metro Detroit

When rainfall is very light you’ll notice almost no storm drain flow volume
in the Red Run as a majority is routed the Detroit Wastewater Treatment Plant (DWTP)
When rainfall is heavy, the water volumes begin to exceed the outlet capacity
for DWTP; excess flow goes into the George W. Kuhn Retention Treatment Basin.
There it is stored, screened and disinfected prior to discharge to the Red Run Drain.

A majority of the water entering the Red Run is therefore just plain rain water.
Any water volume released from the retention center was treated with bleach.
The Red Run Inter-County Group has cracked down on older illicit sewer hookups
sending investigators out to track/trace the flows with dye and fix the issues.
2012 should be a good year as infrastructure personnel continue to make improvements.

Fish in Red Run have slim chance

I can’t find data of fish in the Red Run, even as it merges
into the Clinton River eventually, and flows into Lake St. Clair.

The Kuhn Retention Basin completed in 2006 between I-75 and John R
slightly north of 12 Mile Road in Madison Heights holds storm water
amounts of approximately 124 million gallons; and then lets it all go
during heavy rainfall events into the Red Run drain.

Any fish existing in the Red Run; gets violently swept downstream;
repeatedly during the year; from the stormwater releases at Kuhn.
I doubt fish swim “upstream” against current into the Red Run.

There are waterfowl in and around the Red Run quite often.
I have yet to see any bird take a fish into its beak and eat it.
The Red Run is a storm drain and no longer a natural river.

Chief Pontiac lay siege to Fort Detroit in 1763 known as Pontiac’s Rebellion.
Captain James Dalyell attempted to end the Indians’ siege of the fort
by attacking with 247 British troops an Indian Camp approximately
two miles north of the fort; near what is now East Jefferson/Mt. Elliott.
The battle near Parent Creek came to be known as the Battle of Bloody Run.

It is quite possible that other battles occurred slightly north of Detroit
in the areas now known as Royal Oak, Madison Heights, Warren
giving the Red Run its name as well.

2012 Red Run construction continues

Rains along Red Run for New Years day 2012 caused more landslides.

Crews will continue to work in January stabilizing the steep slopes with
protective blankets made of a straw/coconut weave netting matrix.
Tensar SC150® Double Net Straw-coconut blanket is constructed with
a layer of 70% straw and 30% coconut fiber stitched with degradable thread
between a heavyweight UV stabilized polypropylene top net and a
lightweight photodegradable polypropylene bottom net.
