Warren Michigan history of flooding

October 28, 2014

It’s no surprise to those that have lived here in Warren
during the 1970’s that flooding occurred already back then.
Flooding is NOT new, and is a frequent occurrence in the City.
FEMA has it on the books from 1974
The FEMA maps could use an overhaul now in 2014.

Somewhere in an archive box my parents have a list from City Hall
documenting each time the City sent out a person to snake
the basement drains in an attempt to “fix” the problem.
I think I remember distributing that list to City Council
at a meeting concerning housing development along the Red Run.
The City no longer provides that service for free and attempts
to distance itself from “responsibility” for sewer backups.

FEMA acronyms :
– Community Identification Number (CID)
– Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM),
– Flood Boundary and Floodway Map (FBFM),
– Flood Hazard Boundary Map (FHBM)

  1. Hi, I’m interested in obtaining a map (if one exists) of the areas effected by the flooding in Warren that also hit Royal Oak. Can you direct me to such a resource?

  2. Any of the FEMA FLOOD Maps online will work. 12TownsDrain aka GWK Basin project involves Oakland County city stormwater draining into underground retention facility that flows into Red Run of Warren.
